Joseph Solman 1909 - 2008
From this PBS NewsHour link you can enjoy an excellent tribute to Joseph Solman by his son Paul that aired nationally on June 13th, 2008. Joseph Solman developed a personal style that achieved a delicate balance between the literal and the abstract. From the beginning of his career Solman was recognized for his "semi-abstract" street scenes. This exhibit (below) focuses on several of Solman's street and subway montypes, drawings, and multimedia on paper. We've included several of the famed "Subway Gouaches". Solman originally sketched interesting subway passengers on the back of his newspaper some of which where copied to low-acid paper. In 2003 Solman completed, i.e.,painted, the last cache of these drawings. Joseph Solman's legacy continues to build with prized painting now fetching near $100,000. We've selected these unique works as exquisite examples of Joseph Solman's signature style for your immediate enjoyment. All pieces are framed and ready to display. | A few Museums holding Solman's work British Museum, London, England Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, OH Canton Art Institute, Canton, OH Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C.
